Equivalent Weight- It is the weight substance which or displace 1.008 gram hydrogen or 8 gram of oxygen or 13.5 gram chlorine or 108 gram silver is known as equivalent weight.

=> It is denoted by Capital letter 'E'.

=> Generally we take atomic weight 1 instead of 1.008 of hydrogen.

=> Molar weight of a substance does not change but equivalent weight may change.

Examples-

E(S) in SO2 = ????

=> SO2 = 1 atom Sulpher (32)+ 2 atom Oxygen (32)

On Applying Stoichiometry system

=> 32g 'O' ------> 32g 'S'

=> 8g 'O' --------> 8g 'S'

=> E(S) in SO2 = 8
