Eutrophication, or hypertrophication, is when a body of water becomes overly enriched with minerals and nutrients which induce excessive growth of plants and algae. This process may result in oxygen depletion of the water body.

It is the process of nutrient enrichment of water with consequent loss of species diversity in other words it leads to death of aquatic animals is called as eutrophication.

Special Points:-

1. Lake is known as eutrophic lake.

2. In this process presence of nutrients in lake stimulates growth of algae (algal bloom) increase organic loading and bring about reduction in the oxygen content of water causing death of aquatic animals.

3. Eutrophication can be caused by the following man made source

  • a. House hold detergents,
  • b. Industrial waste,
  • c. Sewage
