Evaporation:
The process in which a substance in liquid state on heating changes to its gaseous state is called evaporation. Evaporation is the phenomenon of transition of a liquid into its vapour at any temperature below its boiling point.
Following points are important for evaporation:
- Evaporation of a liquid takes place at all temperatures below its boiling point.
- Evaporation of a liquid takes place only at the free surface of a liquid.
- Evaporation is a slow and continuous process.

Answer
What is evaporation ?
=> Evaporation is the surface phenomena . where particles from the surface gain enough energy to overcome the force of attraction present in the liquid and change into the vapour state .
- at a given temperature in any gas liquid or solid there particle with different amount of kinetic energy.
- in the case of liquid or small fraction of particle at the surface having higher kinetic energy is able to break away from the force of attraction of other particle and get converted into vapour .
- this phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapour at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation
Factors affecting evaporation
- An increase of surface area ;
=> we know that evaporation is a surface phenomena if the surface area is increased the rate of evaporation increases .
- an increase of temperature ;
=> with the increase the temperature more number of particle get in the kinetic energy to go into the vapour state .
- a decrease in humidity ;
=> humidity is the amount of water vapour present in air . the air around us cannot hold more than a definite amount of water vapour at a given temperature . If the amount of water in air is already high the rate of evaporation decreases.
- an increase in wind speed ;
=> By the increase in wind speed the particle of water vapour move away with the wind decreasing the amount of water vapour in the surrounding .
How does evaporation cause cooling ?
- the particle of liquid absorb energy from the surrounding to regain the energy lost during evaporation . this observation of energy from the surrounding make the surrounding cold .
