Exchange energy: Exchange energy is the energy released when two or more electrons with the same spin exchange their positions in the degenerate orbitals of a subshell.
Explanation:
Exchange energy
The phenomenon whereby individual atomic magnetic moments will attempt to align all other atomic magnetic moments within a material with itself is known as the exchange interaction.
Its significance
It imparts stability to an atom.
For example :
- Let's assume an atom in which there are 5 unpaired electrons(ie one unpaired electron in each one ) in its n d-orbital.
- The Electrons are always moving inside an atom and as the space increases inside ,less is the repulsion as they face between two neighboring electrons, which leads to stability.
- In a degenerate orbital (where energy of each orbital is same), the electrons exchange their positions to get the maximum amount of space for movement and this ultimately leads to stability.
