the pH of a particular substance can be identified by introducing the substance to the pH paper. If the pH paper turns violet, indigo or blue it means that the substance is basic in nature. If the colour of the pH paper turns Red, orange or yellow it means that the the substance is acidic in nature and if the pH paper turns green it means that the substance is neutral.
TIP : take the 7 colours of the rainbow VIBGYOR.
Here VIB is basic
G is neutral and
YOR is acidic
