What is external fertilization? Mention its disadvantage.. 2?
Answers
External fertilization is a reproductive strategy used by many species of aquatic animals. In this strategy, both eggs and sperms are released in the water. Egg fertilize when the sperm reaches the egg. Usually external fertilization is done through spawning. Spawning is a behavior, where many females and male release their eggs and sperms at one place to ensure the fertility of maximum eggs. Frogs, fishes and many other aquatic animals do external fertilization.
Main disadvantage of external fertilization is that it requires aquatic medium to transport sperm to egg. Another disadvantage is that large amount of eggs and sperms get wasted as they never get fertilized.
