Paroxysms are recurrent febrile episodes associated with Plasmodium vivax infections which we call malaria.

Explanation:

  • Malaria paroxysm usually occurs in three stages. It begins with mild fever-like feelings or flu-like symptoms and progresses to fever attacks.
  • The first stage is rigour, which is characterised by a cold sensation, shivering, and flu-like symptoms.
  • Then, 48 to 72 hours after infection, we develop a high-temperature fever ranging from 38 to 41 degrees Celsius. Patients experience fever attacks during this stage, which is known as the febrile stage. Patients may also experience headaches, nausea, dry skin, and flushing.
  • The final stage is the defence stage. Sweating begins at this stage, and the fever begins to subside, and patients begin to sweat profusely.
