in case of plant-
when a pollen grain rests upon the stigma , pollen grains develop a tube like structure through which germinative nucleus reach to the egg and fuses with it. This whole process of fusion is called fertilization.
in case of animals-
when a sperm rushes towards the ova by the beating action of its tail and fuses with it. Then this whole process of fusion is called fertilization.
