A study of serum is serology, and may also include proteomics. Serum is used in numerous diagnostic tests, as well as blood typing. Blood is centrifuged to remove cellular components. Anti-coagulated blood yields plasma containing fibrinogen and clotting factors.

A protein that in humans plays a part in the forming of clots. The clear yellowish fluid obtained upon separating whole blood into its solid and liquid components after it has been allowed to clot. Also called blood serum.
