Food chain

A food chain is a linear network of links in a food web starting from producer organisms and ending at apex predator species, detritivores, or decomposer species. A food chain also shows how the organisms are related with each other by the food they eat. Each level of a food chain represents a different trophic level.


A grazing food chain is a food chain in which the energy in the lowest trophic level is derived from photosynthesis. In grazing food chains the first energy transfer is from plants to herbivores and this is in contrast to detritus food chains where the first energy transfer is from decaying material to detritivores.
