  • The force of Friction is the force that opposes movement when the surface of one object touches the surface of another.
  • The definition of force of friction is "Frictional force refers to the force generated by two surfaces that contacts and slide against each other".

There are Several Factors Affecting Friction Forces:

  • These forces are primarily affected by the surface structure and the forces that attract them.
  • The angle and position of the object affect the magnitude of the frictional force.
  • When the object is laid flat against the object,  the frictional force is equal to the object's weight.
  • The frictional force increases and is heavier than the object's weight When an object is pressed against a surface.

Examples of Frictional force are:

  • While lighting a matchstick, we rub the stick's head (red phosphorus)on the matchbox (white phosphorus). If there's water on the box, the match stick may not ignite. Here, water reduces friction.
  • When driving a car, the engine produces a force on the wheels to drive. This force causes the vehicle to move forward. The tire is made of rubber that prevents slipping on the road surface. The contact between the road and the tire causes friction. Friction is the force that prevents the vehicle from skidding.
