The hydrogen in acids is displaced by the metals to produce hydrogen gas. The two common acids are sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and hydrochloric acid(HCl). No appreciable reaction would occur, for the reaction lacks driving force, no enthalpy not entropy benefits!

Answer:

Three things occurred. First, sulfuric acid as an high affinity for water (it is indeed used as a drying agent in some cases. ... And finally, sulfuric acid is a oxidizing acid: it oxidized part of the hydrochloric acid to chlorine, which made the solution green (which probably was released as a gas, together with HCl).
