When copper oxide reacts with dilute hydrocholric acid, copper chloride is formed and the colour changes from black to bluish-green.

• CuO is black in colour. It reacts with dilute HCl to form copper chloride (CuCl₂) along with water (H₂O).

• The copper chloride formed is bluish-green in colour, and being soluble in water, forms a bluish-green solution in it.

• Therefore, the colour is observed to change from black to bluish-green.

• The balanced chemical equation for the above reaction can be represented as follows :

CuO (black) + 2 dil. HCl → CuCl₂ (bluish-green) + H₂O

Therefore, we see that 1 mole of CuO reacts with 2 moles of dilute HCl to form 1 mole of CuCl₂.
