Fossils are traces of ancient life that manifest themselves in various forms like skeletons, sea shells, tracks, imprints and so on.

  • In simple terms, Fossils are remains of organisms that lived thousands of years ago. With the help of these fossils, scientists have been able to conclude that present form of life on earth has originated from their ancestors in the remote past. Following are the different types of fossils:
  • A mold fossil is an imprint found on the substrate which is a rock or sediment on which a fossil has made it's mark. The imprints thus formed are hollow. Common examples of mold fossils are : skin, leaves, teeth and so on.
  • A cast fossil is very similar to mold fossil, only difference being that cast fossils are not hollow. With passage of time, they get filled with minerals and are hardened to a solid form. Examples of cast fossil are: skin, leaves, embryos and so on.
  • Trace fossils do not directly give information about an organism, rather they give inputs about their respective traces like footprints, dung, tooth mark and so on. These kind of fossils give us an insight into how the organisms lived at that time.
  • True form fossils are the type wherein large body parts of organisms have got filled with minerals. These are formed by a process called as Petrification. Examples of such fossils are: limbs, head, fingers  and so on.
