It is a chronic bacterial disease that is contracted chiefly by infection during sexual intercourse, but also congenitally by infection of a developing fetus.

French pox which is also known as Syphilis which is a sexually transmitted disease spread by  bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. This   can also be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy or at birth, resulting in congenital syphilis.
