Explanation:

Wear and tear due to friction depends on two factors: the roughness of the two surfaces in contact and the amount of time the two surfaces rub against each other. Wear and tear of an object is not desirable as it reduces its life. This is more so in case of moving parts in automobiles and machinery. Therefore, efforts are made to reduce friction between moving parts.

Answer:

Friction is the force between two surfaces, that are trying to slide or sliding across each other. Friction increases when the surfaces are rough, and decreases when the surfaces are smooth. It also increases when the total surface area in contact with either of the surfaces is large, and vice-versa. For example, in ice skating, the skaters are able to glide across the rink because the skates have a very thin area in contact with the ground, and they skate on ice, or synthetic turf, which is smooth. On the other hand, we are able to walk because of friction. When our feet come in contact with the ground, we are able to propel ourselves forward because our feet stay firmly on the ground.
