Cows are mature females of many large
mammalian species, from bovines to
seals, and from buffaloes to elephants
and whales. As far as buffalo and
bovine-cattle are concerned, females of
either species are called cows. A female
buffalo may be called a buffalo cow,
cow-buffalo (or just cow if talking
strictly about buffaloes). Female mature
bovines are just called cows, all to add
to the confusion.
Male buffalo are also called bulls, just
like intact (because you can't "un-
castrate" a male animal) male bovines
are called bulls. Usually, like with
buffalo above, the term "bull-buffalo"
or "buffalo bull" is used to refer to the
male intact buffalo and not the intact
bovine.
And as far as the ox is concerned, it's
not referring to the Arctic Muskox at
all, because muskoxen are more closely
related to goats, not animals in the Bos
genus. No, an ox is a draft/draught/
working bovine animal that are
primarily castrated males, but can also
be females (cows/heifers) and intact
males (bulls) trained for the same
purpose. Buffalo are also trained as
oxen and like cattle, can be male or
female.
