The Ganga action plan was, launched by Shri Rajeev Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India on 14 Jan. 1986 with the main objective of pollution abatement, to improve the water quality by Interception, Diversion and treatment of domestic sewage.

Ganga Action Plan:
- Ganga Action Plan was launched on 14 January 1986. It was initiated by Shri Rajeev Gandhi.
- This plan involves integrated river basin management which related biotic and abiotic ecosystem.
- This plan is applied only to Ganga river and later, Indian Government launched National River Action Plan to treat all polluted rivers in India.
Reasons for launch of Ganga Action Plan:
- It was launched to abate pollution.
- It was launched to improve quality of water to intercept and treat the water sewage and wastes from chemical industries.
- The chemical reduced the water quality largely and it lead to many disease to aquatic animals, terrestrial animals and human consuming it.
- It also launched to stop polluting agents entering the river.
