As you know, everyone has two alleles for every gene. However, there are many kinds of alleles a person can get.
There is the recessive i, and the dominant I^A or I^B. (The ^ means the A and B should be up in the right hand corner)
Put simply:
ii = O blood type
I^A I^A = A blood type
i I^A = A type
I^B I^B = B type
i I^B = B type
I^A I^B = AB type (Because both the A and B alleles are codominant, so neither is suppressed)
As you can see, A blood type and B blood type both each have two possible genotype combinations. So therefore, they will have the same phenotype, but not genotype.
