The word geothermal comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and therme (heat). Geothermal energy is heatwithin the earth. People can use this heat as steam or as hot water to heat buildings or to generate electricity. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source because heat is continuously produced inside the earth.

The 1970s energy crisis was a period when the major industrial countries of the world, particularly the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, faced substantial petroleum shortages, real and perceived, as well as elevated prices.
