Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy required to start a reaction.Generally, without a catalyst the activation energy is very high. Thus a catalyst is used to reduce the activation energy required without which a large amount of external energy needs to be supplied for the reaction to take place.
On the other hand, the Gibbs free energy of the reactants and the products does not change with the presence of a catalyst.
