glycolysis is the conversion of glucose into energy in the form of ATP.  When glycolysis occurs, it breaks down glucose into pyruvic acids in the cytoplasm

These processes occur both in the cell cytoplasm and within the compartments of the mitochondria.

Getting glucose into an organism's cells is the first step of glycolysis.
