Gold Number is a term used in colloidal chemistry. It is defined as the minimum amount of protective colloid in milligrams which prevents a color change from red to violet of 10ml gold sol by the addition of 1 ml of 10%NaCl solution.

Answer:

The capacity of the lyophillic colloid in protecting a lyophobic colloid is measured in terms of gold number, introduced by "Zigmondy".

Definition: it is the number of milligrams of lyophillic colloid that is to be added to 10ml of standard gold sol to prevent its precipitation by the addition of 1ml of a 10% sodium chloride solution.

Lesser the gold number the greater is the protecting capacity.

GOLD NUMBER OF SOME COLLOIDS :

Gelatin:0.005-0.01

Albumin:0.1-0.2
