A heterogeneous rock is composed of various minerals with different coefficient of expansion. Each mineral expands and contracts ar different rates. Stresses are set up inside the rocks and disintegration occurs. This creates gravel or sand in which each grain consists of a single particle. This type of physical weathering is seen in crystalline rocks with coarse mineral grains. The rocks fall apart grain by grain. This is known as granular disintegration.
