Green revolution refers to the introduction of High yielding variety (HYV) of seeds and increased use of fertilizer and irrigation methods. It took place during the 1960s especially 1965onwards. It was aimed at providing increase in production to make India self-sufficient in food grains.

the green revolution brought rapid progress in agriculture. new techniques, better irrigation facilities, modern machines, high yielding varieties of seeds, inputs like fertilisers and pesticides were made available to the farmers. they were given loans and subsidies to adopt modern technology. double cropping, multiple cropping and crop rotation have improved production.
