some gases like CO2, CH4, CFCs, NO2 which are released into the atmosphere in excess quantity through human activity are called greenhouse gases because
just as a greenhouse traps the sun's rays inside it and thus increases the Temperature inside it, these gases trap the sun's heat in the earth's atmosphere. as the heat is not able to escape, the temperature of the atmosphere and the earth in general increases. this is known as greenhouse effect and has adverse effects like melting of glaciers at poles and high altitudes
