As the earth receives heat from the sun. When the surface of the earth heats up it radiates some of the heat towards space. The layer of green house gases( carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide...) that surrounds the earth does not allow all the heat to leave the earths atmosphere. which keeps the earth ideally warm. This effect is known as green house effect.
