The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth's atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. ... The absorbed energy warms the atmosphere and the surface of the Earth.

Its called the green house effect because it has the same effect as a green house, when all the pollution builds up in the atmosphere , the heat cant escape so It's trapped in the atmosphere like it would in a greenhouse. When the heat is trapped in the atmosphere this heats up the earth, causing global warming.
