The vertical columns are called groups. They consist of elements with similar properties, which is why they are called so.

In chemistry, a group (also known as a family) is a column of elements in theperiodic table of the chemical elements. There are 18 numberedgroups in the periodic table, and the f-block columns are not numbered.
