Water in nature always contains dissolved minerals. The calcium and magnesium carbonates and bicarbonates if present in water, then the water is called hard. When such water is used in a boiler or to boil in a kettle, it leaves hard salt deposits. Hence the name hard water. Due to presence of these salts, soap does not give a lather. In worst cases, it can form scum when the soap reacts with the metal salts. The hardness is expressed as the quantity of calcium and magnesium salts in Milli gram present in a litre of water or in other words ppm.

Hard water is water that has high mineral content (in contrast with "soft water"). Hard water is formed when water percolates through deposits of limestone and chalk which are largely made up of calcium and magnesium carbonates.
