One day Helen was stringing beads of different sizes in
symmetrical groups. She made many mistakes and Miss Sullivan very patiently pointed
them out again and again. Then Helen noticed a major error in the sequence and
concentrated her attention on the lesson and tried to think how to arrange the
beads correctly. Miss Sullivan touched her forehead and spelled with emphasis,
"Think".

Immediately Helen understood that the word was the name of the process that was going on in her head. This was her first conscious perception of an abstract idea.
