Heredity is the genetic information passing for traits from parents to their offspring, either through asexual reproduction or sexual reproduction. Variation, a term in genetic science, refers to a genetic change that causes differing characteristics between organisms in a certain species.

Heredity and Variation:

  • Heredity known as inheritance or biological inheritance in scientific language, is the process of the traits being passed from one generation to another, that is from parent to the offspring by various reproductive means.
  • In this process the "offspring cells or organisms" acquires genetic information from their parental generation.
  • Variation is a typical differentiation caused in the cells, organism or a group of organisms of any species either due to Genotypic changes or Phenotypic changes that is due to environmental factors on expression of genetic potential.
  • The major causes include mutations, gene flow and sexual reproduction.
