The process in which certain animals go into a prolonged sleep in winters is hibernation. In such a state, they use their body fat to keep warm and provide nutrients. Bears are good examples of hibernating animals. They often do this because they can't stand cold and restore energy. Their heart rate slows and their is little breathing.
Some also do this in summers. Then, it's called aestivation.
