A homologous series is a series of carbon compounds that have different numbers of carbon atoms but contain the same functional group. For example, methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. are all part of the alkane homologous series.

A class of similarly constituted carbon compounds in which the members present have same functional group and similar chemical properties.there is a gradation in the physical properties of the members present in the series as we move from lower members to the higher members.in each series any two successive members differ by a -CH2- units and by a mass of 14u
