Homologous series :-

A series of compounds in which the same functional group substitutes for a hydrogen in a carbon chain is called homologous series. In this series the adjacent members differ by (-CH2) group. Each member of a homologous series is called homolog.

Properties of Homologous Series:-

• All the members of a homologous series can be represented by a common formula.

• Two successive members are differ by one carbon atom and 2 hydrogen atoms.

• All the members of a homologous series possess similar chemical properties.

• There is a small difference between all the members of a homologous series.

• There is always a differenence of 14a.m.u. in atomic mass of two adjacent homologous.
