Homologous series is a series of compounds with the same GENERAL FORMULA which vary by a single parameter. For example, a homologous series in organic chemistry are alkanes. Their general formula is $C _{n} H_{2n+2}$ and each successive alkane has a $C H_{2}$ group added to it.
