In HVZ(Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky) reaction, phosphorus reacts with bromine to give phosphorus tribromide.
First step:The carboxylic acid is converted to an acyl bromide.
Second step: An alpha hydrogen is replaced with bromine atom.

HVZ stands for Hell Volhard Zelinsky Reaction.
The treatment with bromine and catalyst amount of phosphorus leads to the selective a- bromination of carboxylic acids.
