The meaning of the word moiety is the functional group but when we consider the IUPAC definition moiety is part of a large molecule.

Hydro means water and philic mean loving, so hydrophilic means water loving.

So if we identify the meaning of hydrophilic moiety then this means that moiety which is soluble in water or which has a very strong affinity for water.

Hydrophilic moiety or substance or part of a molecule are water loving. They get dissolved in water where as hydrophobic molecules are water fearing, they do not dissolve in water. Hydrophilic moiety has strong affinity for water and they are also dissolved in other polar substances. Due to this reason reason lipids have hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails. Cell membranes are made up of proteins and lipids. Hydrophilic heads are present towards outer surface and inner surface of cell and hydrophobic tails are present in between.
