It is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. The influence of the Colonial power wields power especially in political and economic affairs.

Exploitation of resources of the colony and earn more and profit and spread their own culture used to be the main motives of the Imperialist powers.

Example - India was colony of an Imperialist power England.

But, then, there are examples of Vietnam which was colonized by France but had to face different treatment than India got at the hands of the British.
