Water ways transport is the cheapest means of transportation .
For India,
1) Being cheapest means of transportation, it can profit India's maritime trade with other countries.
2) Some parts of Indian territories are inaccessible through land. Water ways , people use boats to ferry off goods and themselves like in Vishakapatnam, backwaters of Kerala,etc
3) Not only that , since ancient times India has flourished it's trade through sea routes. Ships loaded with cotton, iron, jute,etc have been transported to West, South Asian, European countries , and what the heavy bulk materials like coal, iron ,etc can only be transported through water ways.
