* Industrial melanism is a direct effect of evolution as seen in case of some organisms( mainly arthropods), where a particular trait( colour of feathers, fur or skin) has been acquired by a majority of the population to survive.

* It was observed in industrial regions that moths evolved to develop dark coloured bodies that helped them to evade their predators.

* The barks of the trees became dark due to pollutants from the industries which helped these dark coloured insects to camouflage themselves against the environment.

The presence and prevalence of deep-colored animals and insects, specifically moths, in industrial regions in comparison to other forms is known as industrial melanism.

Explanation:

  • In an industrial area, the environment is generally more polluted than the other locations, and this is evident by the presence of more toxins in the air.
  • An evolutionary impact has been witnessed in these areas where, animals specifically moths have developed with distinctly darker pigmentation to help them camouflage better in the surrounding air filled with pollutants, soot, and sulphur dioxide.
