Farmers use their small land Holdings to produce enough for their local consumption while remaining produce is used for the exchange of of other goods.

This is done because costly seeds and fertilizers and use of insecticides are not affordable in smaller farm Holdings.

This is called intensive subsistence farming.

it is also known as commercial maintenance farming.

so even today, Indian agriculture is considered to be an activity for life maintenance only.
