ions are formed when a neutral atom looses or gains electrons. In this process atoms gets positive or negative charge thus converted into ions namely positively charged ion- cation and negatively charged ion - anion

(i) Cation : +ve charged atom (e.g. Na+,K+,Mg²+ etc.)
(ii) Anion : -ve charge atom
(e.g. Cl-,O²- etc.)
