The irony in the chapter is this that Mrs. and Mr. Bramble worked so hard in keeping the secret about Mr. Bramble’s profession of boxing hidden from him. They lied to him that his father was a commercial traveler. They did so because they feared the truth would interfere with Harold’s healthy growth and development. Besides, the curate had also advised them to keep it hidden from Harold. Percy, his uncle also had expressed his approval on hiding it from Harold. However, at the end, when Harold came to know his father was none other than ‘Young Porky’, he liked the revelation. He felt proud of his father. He rather became angry at his parents for hiding his father’s profession from him, as at school, everyone would be scared of him for being a boxer's son.
