Explanation:

Isomerism is the phenomenon in which more than one compounds have the same chemical formula but different chemical structures. Chemical compounds that have identical chemical formulae but differ in properties and the arrangement of atoms in the molecule are called isomers.

The organic compounds having the same molecular formula but different arrangements of carbon atoms in them is known as an isomers.

  • Examples of isomers are normal butane and iso butane because they have the same molecular formula but different arrangements of carbon atoms.

  • Normal butane has a straight chain structure whereas iso butane has a branched chain structure.

Related to isomers and isomerism :-

Isomerism is possible only with hydrocarbon having 4 or more carbon atoms.

  • for example no isomerism is possible in methane, ethane and propone because they contain only one,two or three carbon atoms respectively.

Two isomers of the compounds butane \rm\:({C_4}{H_{10}}) are possible.
