Isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic are comparative terms used for the solute present inside a cell and the solute present outside cell i.e in the solution.
ISOTONIC SOLUTIONS: MEAN THAT THE SOLUTE CONCENTRATION INSIDE THE CELL IS EQUAL TO THE SOLUTE CONCENTRATION OUTSIDE THE CELL, SO THERE WILL BE NO NET MOVEMENT OF WATER.
HYPERTONIC SOLUTIONS:MEAN THAT THE SOLUTE CONCENTRATIONS INSIDE THE CELL IS LESS THAN THAT OUTSIDE THE CELL, SO THE WATER WILL MOVE OUTSIDE THE CELL AND SO THE CELL BECOMES CRENATED IN CASE OF ANIMAL CELLS WHEREAS PLASMOLYSED IN CASE OF PLANT CELLS.
HYPOTONIC SOLUTIONS : MEAN THAT THE SOLUTE CONCENTRATION INSIDE THE CELL IS MORE THAN THE SOLUTE CONCENTRATION OUTSIDE THE CELL, SO THE WATER MOVES INSIDE THE CELL AND THE CELL BECOMES SWOLLEN AND MAY ALSO BURST IN EXTREME CASES AND IS TERMED AS HAEMOLYSED CELL AS IN CASE OF ANIMAL CELLS NWHEREAS TURGID CELL AS IN CASE OF PLANT CELLS.

A solution in which the concentration of the solute is high is known as HYPERTONIC SOLUTION.
A solution in which the concentration of the solute is low is known as HYPOTONIC SOLUTION.
A solution in which the concentration of the solute is slightly equal is known as ISOTONIC SOLUTION.
A solution in which the concentration of the solute is low is known as HYPOTONIC SOLUTION.
A solution in which the concentration of the solute is slightly equal is known as ISOTONIC SOLUTION.
