karyopyknotic index is an index used to monitor the hormonal status of the patient as reflected by exfoliated vaginal cells and their morphology; an expression of the percentage of intermediate and superficial cells from squamous cells of vaginal epithelium which have pyknotic nuclei. It also recognizes the generalized relationship
between nucleus size and cell size.
