QUESTION:-

what is kharikatana

ANSWER:-

  • During the reign of King Chandrakanta Singha (1810-1818), the king was not in a stance to pay the usual salaries to his standing army due to an acute crisis of finance so he imposed a different kind of house tax which was called gharkar in Kamrup which changed to Borboruah Hiteswar in 2013.

  • In the Upper region of Assam, this tax was called Ga-dhan also known as body tax and it was collected at the rate of one rupee on every individual pack. When the Burmese seized Assam they collected this tax with much harshness which was known as Kharika-tana.
