What is known as reign of terror and why did Robespierre introduce it?

Reign of terror was a period under the power of Robespierre. He punished people who he found as enemies of republic and did not match with his ideas. Robespierre imprisoned them and tried them with a revolutionary tribunal and the people who were found to be guilty were guillotined by beheading them.
