steppes is an ecoregion, in the montane grasslands and shrublands and temperate grasslands, savannas and shrublands biomes, characterized by grassland plains without trees apart from those near rivers and lakes. In South Africa, they are referred to as veld.

steppes is a large area of land with grass but no trees,especially in Eastern Europe,Russia and central Asia
